Sponge Capsules~Discovery Station

Sponge Capsules!

Is is a bird?  It a plane? Or is it a SUPER DINOSAUR?!

Sponge capsules spark so much interest and curiosity in kids.  This new addition to our Discovery Station has been a huge hit!

I bought a variety of sponge capsules from Target's Dollar Spot, opened all the packages, and dumped them into one baggie.  Dinosaurs mixed with bugs, vehicles, and ocean creatures;  the kids just had no idea what they were getting!!

At our Discovery Station, the students follow the pictorial directions posted on the wall.

Fill container with water.

Choose capsule from Mystery bag and drop 'er in!

The kids drew each step in the process.  I encouraged reaching in to feel the capsule dissolving.

Our papers got a bit soggy, but that's all right!

At the end, they drew the final sponge image.

Next time I might have the kids draw what they predict the sponge to be.  They will have to narrow down the options based on the types of sponges available.

Fun, Fun, Learning!!

Discovery Station - Mass

I'm always looking for more ideas to put into our Discovery Station!
Lately, we have been learning about mass.

The kids select two objects and place them in the balance.

Once they discover which has more mass, they draw the two objects on the recording sheet and circle the one with more mass.

I'll post a copy of the recording sheet, but for now you can see it on the picture directions!

Spring is coming so I see dirt, worms, and chrysalis in our future!

What do you have in your Discovery Station?

Baking Bread

Hello All!
It's been a little while since I've posted anything.  Getting Kindergarten going has been fun and exhausting.  I'll post pics of my classroom soon.

This week we are reading a couple of versions of The Little Red Hen.  We've also been working on properties of matter, and this week is how matter changes when heated and cooled.

So, I couldn't resist making bread!  This weekend one of my boys and I tested out the recipe so I'll know what to expect when we make it in the classroom.

Flour
salt and sugar

oil

yeast

Almost forgot the eggs!!

Start
He REALLY REALLY wanted to peek in the window!
