The Three Billy Goats Gruff mini-unit

Reading:

Characters
Setting
Retelling
Sequencing
Sight Words

After reading the story, we recreated the setting and characters.  The river looks black, but it's really dark blue.  The kiddos got to draw their versions of the three goats and the troll and create the river and bridge. Then we made our characters into finger puppets and took turns retelling the story with friends.  Later, we use our setting and characters to solve math problems (see below).

Sight Word Game-Over the Troll Bridge!!
(bridge and playing cards below)

Object:  Cross the bridge before the troll gets you!!

In a bag place all the sight word cards, 3 trolls, and 3 billy goats.
Players take turns pulling a card.
If you get a sight word card, read it and place it on a plank.
If you don't know it, put it back in the bag and lose a turn.
Billy goats are lucky!
If you pull a billy goat, he goes onto the next plank, and you take another card.
Look out for the Troll!!!
If you pull a troll, he takes all your cards and puts them back into the bag!

Math:

Problem Solving

When we created our setting, we made sure that we had 8 planks on our bridge to use for the math problems.  Students use their goats, troll, and counters to solve the math problems on their bridge.

Kiss Me! I'm Irish! St. Patrick's Day is Here!

My dad used to dye the milk green on St. Patrick's Day.  I never could drink it, if only we'd made some of these cute crafts and games!

Here is a paper plate craft from Busy Bee!

Maybe a combination of the paper plate one with this one from Happy Home Fairy.

Here is a Shamrock Toss game from Fun in First!

Here's a writing activity from The First Grade Parade...I feel lucky when...

This mini unit from What the Teacher Wants has some great printable for graphing, writing, and math.
I love the "How to Catch a Leprechaun" idea!

Mrs. Morrow's Kindergarten has so many great ideas at her site.  Here are a few that I think I might use.

Valentine's Day Fun

There are so many awesome ideas out there for Valentine's Day fun!
www.designmom.com

I always love having my kiddos make mom a special gift or card each year.

This year I'm having them make this accordion fold card that I found on Brilliant Beginning Preschool.

Here's our runner up!

If we have time, this one might get made for daddy!

I found it at Tons of Fun!

And here's one to mail to Grandma and Grandpa from Tons of Fun also!

Mail a hug!  How cute is that!!

Three Little Pigs Unit-Part 1

Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf?

Last week, my Kinders had a lot of fun with The Three Little Pigs!

Reading and Language Arts

1.  We read and watched different versions of the story and compared similarities and differences.

Thanks to my teammate, Marsha, for sharing the links to online versions below!

This picture links to an online version that we read on our Promethean board.

This is an online version of the book from Kizclub.

This picture links to Speakaboos where my secret sweetheart, Anthony Bourdain, reads the book!
Speakaboos also has Judy Tenuta reading.

Classic Three Little Pigs from 1933.

2.  We analyzed the different characters.

The kiddos gave me words to describe the characters, and I wrote them on cards.

The next day, I mixed them up and placed them next to the correct character.

3.  We followed pictorial directions to create a little pig of our own!

Check out those mismatched eyes!!

I love how even though it was a following directions activity, their personalities come through!

This is the template cut onto card stock.

Here are the directions.

I used the Promethean board and showed one slide at a time.

Hope you've enjoyed!

Leave me a comment to let me know how you'd use/vary The Three Little Pigs activities.

Or let me know what other cool skill I could do next time!!
