Three Little Pigs Unit -Part 2

Here are some of the other Three Little Pig Activities that we did!

1.  We retold the story with finger prints on cards.  (This way, I got to hear each child's retelling abilities!)

2.  We analyzed the plot structure of the story!

Here's a close up of a couple of my favorite scenes!

Love this Shaggy Wolf!

Roar!  Into the pot of water!

Drooling wolf and wide eyed piggie!!

Fire Breath!

3.  Rhyming Pop-Up Books for the synonym, "hog."

How to make a Pop-Up Book tutorial coming soon!

Writing Prompts

1.  Draw a picture of what the story of The Three Little Pigs would be like underwater.  Write how it would change.

2.  What would you do if the wolf came to your house?

3.  What if the Big Bad Wolf was a Big Bad Owl?

Math

I got this idea from another blogger, but I couldn't find it to reference.  Let me know if you recognize it so I can reference it!  Thanks!

1.  We learned about AREA by filling in the three pigs houses with straw (spaghetti), sticks (fettucini), and bricks (red beans)!

I know I took pictures of the brick houses too, but the photos have VANISHED!!

2.  We added a new game to our stations called PigzUp!

Players flip over cards until 2 players have the same number.

Players then must stack that number of pigs before the opponent can!

This is great for fine motor skills too!

How to Make a Pop-Up Book

My kiddos love making books, and they flipped when I introduced them to the Pop-Up book!

We used one for rhyming that you can check out in the Three Little Pigs post!

 Here's how they are made:

 1. Fold construction paper in 1/2.

 2. Cut two slits about 1 1/2-2 inches apart on the folded edge of the paper.

 3. Fold the flap in on itself.

 4. Cut as many of these as you have pages in your book

 5. Glue the pages back to back.

 6. To create a cover, take one uncut piece of construction paper.

 7. Glue it to the first and last page of the pop up book.

 8. You're ready to go!!

How would you use pop-up books in class?

Comments make me POP with joy!!

Three Little Pigs Unit-Part 1

Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf?

Last week, my Kinders had a lot of fun with The Three Little Pigs!

Reading and Language Arts

1.  We read and watched different versions of the story and compared similarities and differences.

Thanks to my teammate, Marsha, for sharing the links to online versions below!

This picture links to an online version that we read on our Promethean board.

This is an online version of the book from Kizclub.

This picture links to Speakaboos where my secret sweetheart, Anthony Bourdain, reads the book!
Speakaboos also has Judy Tenuta reading.

Classic Three Little Pigs from 1933.

2.  We analyzed the different characters.

The kiddos gave me words to describe the characters, and I wrote them on cards.

The next day, I mixed them up and placed them next to the correct character.

3.  We followed pictorial directions to create a little pig of our own!

Check out those mismatched eyes!!

I love how even though it was a following directions activity, their personalities come through!

This is the template cut onto card stock.

Here are the directions.

I used the Promethean board and showed one slide at a time.

Hope you've enjoyed!

Visualizing with The Important Book

If you have never read The Important Book by Margaret Wise Brown, you are missing out on a real treat!

I have often used this book in the beginning of the year, with upper grades, as a getting to know you activity.

We've made a class book called Mrs. Collier's Important Class where the students create a page that tell the important thing about themselves.
This year, I used The Important Book to teach Visualization.

First, I hid the book inside a folder so the kiddos wouldn't get clues from the cover.

Then, I read a page:

The important book goes something like this:

The important thing about an apple is that it is round.
It grows on trees, and you eat it.
When you bite into it, it is white and juicy.

BUT, instead of saying, "Apple,"  I say, "this thing/object."

The important thing about this thing is that it is round.
It grows on trees, and you eat it.
When you bite into it, it is white and juicy.

The kids have to visualize and then draw what they think the object could be.

Apple and Spoon
Flower and Rain

The kids really enjoyed the riddles and drawing out the pictures!

How else do you teach visualization?

I'm Visualizing comments....:D

Visualization-Katalina Matalina

Who doesn't LOVE Katalina Matalina!

Well...maybe a teammate of mine after I get the song stuck in her head all day!

We've had a lot of fun this week working on Visualization!

One of my favorite activities was listening to the song Katalina Matalina from Dr. Jean's CD Dr. Jean Sings Silly Songs.

I stopped the song after every section describing Katalina Matalina, and we drew what she looked like!

Her head was shaped like a baseball bat!
And right on top sat a funny little hat!

She had 2 eyes in her head,
One was purple and the other one was red!

Her neck was as long as a 10 foot pole
and right in the middle was a big black bow!

She had two hairs in her head,
One was alive and the other one was dead.

But she had a heart, so I'm told,
that was made of the purest gold!

After we played the song and drew her picture, we used the print version of the book from Dr. Jean's site for our shared reading!
